Segments

Build a segment rule

The kinds of rule you can write, how all and any change who qualifies, and what the live count is telling you.

Updated 22 October 2026

A rule is one thing you're asking about a contact — a fact they carry, or something they did.

The two kinds of rule

Customer facts are things that are true of someone right now. They're grouped in the picker the way you'd look for them: Contact (name, email, phone, WhatsApp, tags, how they were added), Demographics (city, country, company, birthday, age), Engagement (last message sent, opened, clicked, gone quiet), Leads, Payments, Orders, Invoices, Forms, Conversations, Activation, Relationships — what they hold and its status — and Reachability.

Business events are things that happened: *Bought this item*, *Settled an invoice*, *Went overdue on an invoice*, *Appointment missed*, *Lead converted*, *Feedback submitted*, *Coupon redeemed*. For each one you choose whether it Occurred, how many times, or when it first or last happened — and you can narrow it to a particular Form, coupon or lead stage. You'll only be offered the events for the parts of Qcom you're allowed to read.

A few facts move on their own. Age is worked out from the birthday you hold, so a segment for over-60s stays right next year — and someone with no birthday on file matches no age rule at all. Anything phrased *in the last 30 days* shifts with the clock the same way.

Rules about a membership or plan ask you one more thing: which Catalog item you mean.

  • Any Catalog item is the broad question. *Membership or plan type has any of Membership* finds everyone who's a member of anything you sell.
  • A named item narrows it to that one, so a renewal notice for your Gold plan doesn't reach people on every other plan.
  • has any of and has none of take more than one value, because somebody can hold a subscription and a membership at the same time.
  • Looking for people who've left? Ask for *Membership or plan status has any of Ended*.
  • Overdue on a membership or plan is whoever hasn't paid or renewed on the payment they're on now. Somebody who was late once and has since caught up isn't in it.

Build one

  1. Open Audience → Segments and choose New segment.
  2. Name it, leave it as a Segment, and continue.
  3. In Rule group 1, choose Add customer fact or Add business event.
  4. Say whether the group needs every rule or any rule.
  5. Need *this set of things, or that set*? Choose Add another group of rules, then set the top choice to Can match any condition.
  6. Watch Who matches so far on the right, then save.

Two shortcuts sit at the top: Start with a ready-made group fills the rules in for a common audience, and Ask Qyra drafts changes from a plain description — Qyra suggests, you tick what to apply.

Text rules ignore capitals, so *accra* and *Accra* find the same people.

Find buyers of one variant

In a completed-order rule, set Orders containing to A Catalog item variant. Choose the item, then its variant, such as a particular size or colour. Use Archived items when the item is no longer current. Inactive variants remain available for past purchases. Use Find a variant or Load more variants when the choice is not shown yet.

The rule counts each currently completed order once, even if it contains several matching lines or units. The period uses when the order was placed, not when payment arrived or the order became completed. Choosing A Catalog item instead includes every variant of that item.

Changing the item clears the variant choice, so choose its replacement before saving. If a saved choice cannot be loaded, Qcom keeps its exact selection; it does not substitute an item with a similar name.

Use the web rule builder or ask Qyra for this rule. The mobile app's basic rule form does not offer variant selection. Review the selected scope before applying a Qyra draft.

When the count doesn't look right

Nothing shows yet. The preview waits until at least one rule is complete — a field, a comparison and a value.

No sample names underneath. The count is there, but the few example people only appear if you're allowed to see contacts.

The number differs from a campaign audience. Matching contacts and contacts eligible for bulk messaging are different counts. Sending audiences exclude unsubscribed or complained contacts and those held back at the plan's contact limit. A contact-matching view can include them; membership alone is not permission to send. Check which count you are reading.

You're editing a saved segment. The stored size updates through evaluation. Update count requests another evaluation; some rules are queued, so wait for completion and review the refreshed result rather than treating a queued request as a new count.

Some older orders have no recorded variant. They cannot prove whether someone bought the selected variant. Qcom may show known buyers with incomplete coverage, but it cannot use those records to prove an exact count, no purchases or a complete Group. Review the available order history or choose a rule that the retained history can support.

The variant list could not be loaded. Check your access to Catalog and Commerce with a workspace owner or admin. A missing list is not evidence that the item has no variants.

Before saving changed rules, review any campaign or Catalog content using the segment: the new membership can change who qualifies there. Previewing a rule sends no campaign. After saving, reopen the segment to check its rules and selected item or variant. Continue with Where you can use a segment.
