Audiences, groups and tags on a contact

What the Audiences and Tags panels show, where membership is decided, and where tags come from.

Updated 22 October 2026

A contact's profile shows the Audiences, Segments and contact groups they belong to, along with their tags.

Audiences, segments, groups and tags

A segment is a set of rules. Everyone who matches is in it, and people join and leave on their own as facts about them change.

A contact group is a manually maintained Segment. Its members stay selected until someone changes the list. Creating a group from matching contacts saves the current selection; it does not turn the group into a changing rule.

An Audience is a named list, such as people from a sign-up form. Its membership changes when someone updates the list or the source it comes from.

A tag is a word on the person, not an audience. Tags have no members and no rules — they're something a segment rule can ask about, and something you can filter your contacts by.

Audiences and Segments are managed separately. An Audience does not become a Segment, and a Segment does not add people to an Audience.

What the profile shows

Audiences shows the lists you have permission to view. Segments shows the contact's Segment and group memberships that you can view. Use Load more when more memberships are available.

  • Open — go to the audience and see everyone else in it.

Tags shows the labels on the record, and is where you add and remove them.

An empty section means no memberships were found among the lists you can view. Unavailable or an access notice means the complete membership list could not be shown. Use Refresh, or ask a workspace owner or admin to check your access. Tags stays visible so you can add a first tag.

Narrow your contacts to one

On Contacts, pick a saved audience from the Audience filter to show only its members. A banner confirms which one, with the count and a Send Campaign button. The tag filter takes several tags at once.

Audience, status, tag, and source filters can be combined. Clear filters returns to all contacts.

Changing who's in one

Not from Contacts — who belongs to an audience is decided on the audience:

  • A Segment — change its rules under Audience → Segments. There's no add or remove button, because facts and events decide.
  • A contact group — add or remove selected contacts under Audience → Groups.
  • An Audience — choose it in the Contacts import flow or manage it under Audience → Audiences.

Adding a new group member can trigger a published Journey configured for that group. Its audience and repeat-entry rules still apply; adding an existing member again creates no new entry. Check enrollment or run history separately rather than treating membership as proof the Journey ran.

Where tags come from

Add tag on the contact's Tags panel adds your own label — several at once if you separate them with commas — and the × on a tag takes it off. Use consistent wording so your team and segment rules can find the intended label. A tag is not a verified customer fact or messaging consent.

They also arrive three other ways:

  • the Tags column when you import contacts, written as a comma-separated list
  • an automation's Add Tag or Remove Tag step
  • asking Qyra to tag someone

Tag changes show on the contact's Activity tab as *Tags added* or *Tags removed*.

Lead tags are a separate thing. Promote tag to Leads on the Leads board labels the opportunity, not the person, so it won't show up here.

When someone isn't in the audience you expected

They stopped matching. Review the rules and latest evaluation. A changed fact can remove someone when membership is evaluated; the stored list may be waiting for an update.

They match but cannot receive a campaign. Unsubscribed or complained contacts and those held back at the plan's contact limit are excluded from bulk sending audiences. They can still appear in contact-matching or membership views. Do not remove a preference to increase the send count. See Why someone isn't in a segment.

You can't see an audience you expected. The selector shows hand-picked audiences. Ask a workspace owner or admin to check the audience and your access.

A tag or membership change is uncertain. Refresh the exact contact and list before repeating the change. Check the campaign's actual recipient result separately; a tag or group membership does not prove a message was sent.
