Open and close a counter shift
Start your shift, hand back a till, or recover a till someone left open.
Updated 22 October 2026
A shift records who opened a till, its cash movements and who handed it back. Closing keeps your cash count and any difference for review. It does not settle outstanding payments.
How it works
Each till has at most one open shift. Staff need permission to open or close a shift. Only the person who opened a shift can close it normally.
A manager with separate permission can end another person's abandoned shift. The manager must give a reason, and Qcom records who ended it. Sales remain attributed to the original cashier.
Open or close your shift
- Open More and choose your till.
- Enter Opening cash and its currency if you are starting with change, then choose Open shift. Some workspaces require opening cash.
- When you finish, choose Close shift, count the cash and enter Counted cash in its currency.
- Close the shift, then open View last cash report to review or print the result.
Leave the count blank only when the shift has no cash activity. Cash awaiting payment review is included in expected till cash and shown separately in the report. A cash difference above the workspace threshold opens an independent review; it does not prevent you handing back the till.
Closing a shift does not clear unsettled cash. Those payments need independent review. Signing out leaves the shift open, so close it first when handing the till back.
Recover an abandoned till
- Open More and choose the occupied till. You don't need an open shift yourself.
- Choose End abandoned shift.
- Explain why the shift is being ended and choose End shift.
The till can then be used for a new shift. An independent cash review opens, with no invented count for the absent cashier. Ending someone else's shift does not give you their authority to settle its cash.
When you can't continue
A switched-off till cannot start a shift. Choose another or ask your manager.
If you already have an open shift, close that shift before opening another. If someone else has left a shift running, ask them to close it or ask a manager with permission to end abandoned shifts.
If the command doesn't complete, use Refresh tills before trying again. This shows whether the change reached Qcom when the connection was interrupted.
See Count the till and review a cash difference for movements, recounts and review decisions. For the next sale, see Create an order at the counter.
